Biography
Walker Diver is a Dutch powerpop/garage band centered around singer-songwriter Stefan ’t Hooft (1973). The band’s line up varies from album to album and the musicians that play on the recordings aren’t necessarily in the live band. But with this record, some old familiar faces have returned to the mothership, both in the studio and on stage.
The band has been described as ‘The Dutch REM’ (Heaven magazine) and ‘Somewhere between Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen’ (OOR magazine), but we call it dead honest rock ‘n’ roll with a rootsy kind of vibe.
From 1998 tot 2002 ’t Hooft played in Mitch, an indie rock band that toured intensively, supporting bands like Grandaddy, Centro-Matic and Soulwax and released one critically acclaimed album; Razzle Dazzle (2000). When Mitch fell apart, he decided to go solo under the moniker of Walker Diver.
On the first Walker Diver release, a 7” e.p., it really was just him playing all the instruments and on stage it was just him and his guitar. Having a short attention span and a getting fed up with talkative audiences, he quickly decided he needed a new band.
After recruiting a few top musicians from Utrecht, he recorded the first Walker Diver album ‘White Knuckle Ride’ in 2004. The record got great reviews in the Dutch music press and the band played a good number of shows. But after a year or so, the band broke up because all members had obligations elsewhere. And that is how it’s always been. Record after record, tour after tour.
But this time around ‘t Hooft has assembled a band consisting of key members of past incarnations and they’re all revved up and got no place to go. Contrary to the last couple of records that leaned more towards country/folk, the latest album Probleemwolf is about a different kind of roots. The roots that made them want to pick up a tennis racket, or preferably a guitar and make an actual racket. We’re talking Cheap Trick, The Raspberries, Flaming Groovies, The (Paul Collins) Beat.

Biografie
Walker Diver is een Utrechtse gitaarband gecentreerd rond singer-songwriter Stefan ’t Hooft. De bezetting verschilt per album en per tour; muzikanten die op de plaat spelen, zitten niet per definitie in de live band – en andersom. De muziek is al eens omschreven als ‘De Nederlandse R.E.M.’ (Heaven) en ‘Ergens tussen Elvis Costello en Bruce Springsteen’ (OOR), maar zelf houden we het op doodeerlijke rock ‘n’ roll met een rootsy inslag.
Van 1998 tot 2002 maakte ’t Hooft deel uit van de West-Brabantse gitaarband Mitch. Een band die ondanks succesvolle optredens op Noorderslag (1999) en voorprogramma’s van bands als Centro-Matic, Soulwax, Grandaddy en één album (Razzle Dazzle) ophield te bestaan. Vervolgens besloot hij solo te gaan onder de naam Walker Diver.
Na één e.p. waarop hij alles zelf speelde, formeerde hij een band waarmee hij het eerste Walker Diver album ‘White Knuckle Ride’ (2004) opnam. De plaat kreeg lovende recensies in de pers, maar na een reeks optredens viel de band uit elkaar, omdat alle muzikanten verplichtingen hadden bij andere bands. En zo zou het altijd gaan.
In de loop der jaren heeft ’t Hooft het geluk gehad met geweldige muzikanten samen te werken, zowel op plaat als live. Denk aan Maarten Ouweneel (Danny Vera), Mathijs Peeters (Gasoline Brothers, Litzberg), Joris Verbogt (Magic Frankie, Bradley’s Circus, Nienke Dingemans), Jan van Bijnen (Claudia de Breij, Freek de Jonge, Fortunate Sons) etc etc…
Op het nieuwste Walker Diver album Probleemwolf, dat verschijnt op 25 maart 2026, keren een aantal oudgedienden terug naar het nest. Mathijs Peeters, Patrick Delabie en Maarten Vermeulen hebben niet alleen de plaat ingespeeld, maar zullen ook live Stefan ondersteunen. Ook qua stijl grijpt de band terug op het verleden. In tegenstelling tot de laatste paar albums, die vooral rootsy van toon waren, gaat de volumeknop nu weer open. Denk aan The Replacements, Dinosaur Jr en Guided By Voices. Hard en onstuimig, maar altijd melodieus en toegankelijk.
