Voor wie in een platenzaak al bladerend door een bak op het vijfde album van Walker Diver stuit, kan zo’n sticker op de hoes verhelderend werken. ‘For fans of Big Star, The Replacements, Sugar en Dinosaur Jr.’ Daar is ook nog eens geen woord van gelogen.
Stefan ’t Hooft schrijft al ruim een kwart eeuw knappe drieminutensongs die het midden houden tussen indierock, folk, alt.country en nog zo het een en ander dat muzikaal sneller gekoppeld wordt aan Tucson, Austin, Minneapolis of Nashville dan aan Utrecht, of, eerder nog, Roosendaal. Een held achter de microfoon met een gitaar rond zijn nek vóór zijn band in Studio 195 in Wernhout. Diep van binnen een held met goede bedoelingen, die als ware hij de premier overal ‘Yes I can’ tegen zou willen zeggen. ‘Oh I’d like to be a fearless man.’ Maar de waarheid is anders. ‘Don’t put your trust in me.’ Goudeerlijk rockalbum. https://oor.nl/albums/probleemwolf/

Dutch singer, guitarist and songwriter Stefan ’t Hooft started his musical career in the early ‘90s as a member of punk bands s.a. Brainless Pineapples. During the second half of the ‘90s and the early 2000s he was part of indierockers Mitch, after which he founded his own band/project Walker Diver, where he was joined by rotating casts of musicians. Many of their releases were more or less in the alt country/Americana vein, but on this year’s ‘Probleemwolf’ Stefan lets his more rocking side prevail once again. ‘Can’t Feel My Heart Today’ and ‘Damage Limitation Excercise’ are well crafted slices of indie rock that kinda remind of the aforementioned Mitch, while the standouts ‘It Doesn’t Work That Way’ and ‘Fortune Telling Friends’ reveal a strong Bob Mould influence, say ‘Flip Your Wig’-era Hüsker Dü. Maybe some of the other songs on the album are slightly ‘less suitable’ for review in a punk zine, but that doesn’t mean the quality of the songwriting and musicianship isn’t consistently high throughout. Cos it is! For the recordings of ‘Probleemwolf’ (at Studio 195) Stefan was assisted by bass player Maarten Vermeulen (who also contributed to the latest Angstgegner LP), guitarist Mathijs Peters and sound engineer and producer Patrick Delabie (a.o. Scoundrels, Ford’s Fuzz Inferno and The VanCooths), who also helped out on drums. (Ferry Kortenbeek)
